Cometh The Hour

Posted by: katdibbits on: July 21, 2011

The BBC’s long-awaited The Hour started this week and I’ve held off making my views public until I’ve had time to mull it over properly.

In short, however, I loved it. Much has been made of the similarities to Mad Men, but other than undoubtedly sparking a few fashion moments, this is a very much more British product. The murder subplot, for example, would never be something Don Draper would get tangled up in, despite his recreational drug use and lax morals. And while it is stylish, the focus is more character-led than fashion-based.

However, there were some great outfits. And never slow on the uptake, the PRs have already started sending their “Get The Hour look” releases. My favourite so far are these Viyella dresses:

Food for thought

I’ve become a bit obsessed with taking pictures of my food. Particularly food I’ve made myself, but also food that’s been sent to the office, food that’s made me laugh and, on occasion, leftover packaging from food that I’ve eaten and now I’m sad it’s gone.

Yeah, I know, I need to get a life.

But that led me to thinking about blogging and food photography. I cook things that in reality look awesome (see the broad bean and chorizo bruscetta) but when I photograph them look… icky. I have a Canon SLR and an HTC desire. Any tips?

How the mighty fall

Just had the very lovely PR for George Michael on the phone about his Comic Relief single. Felt kinda bad breaking it to her that on our paper international superstars lose out on the charity single front to… The Wanted.
Yep, two if them are from round our way, and charming boys they all are too, even if their recording career is currently a gnat’s lifespan compared to the oft-unlucky Faith hitmaker.
On a related front, our politics reporter just passed on this gem: “Kat, have you seen that Phil Collins has announced his retirement? I thought he’d fucked off years ago.” Feel free to post your favourite Phil stories below.

Soundtracks and suggestive invites

I often spend days at a time with a particular song stuck in my head. Sometimes it’s annoying as hell, sometimes it’s actually very pleasant. Today I can’t really complain…

Yesterday I received an invite to the preview of the Anish Kapoor exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery. What can I say, apart from gosh?

Wrinkly wrestlers and Olivier nominees

Two interesting interviews today. One was Buddy Ward, the world’s oldest wrestler. He’s got 30 kids and is on his sixth wife, which he described as an “occupational hazard”. What, like rope burns? Last year he appeared on Russell Howard’s Good News – I remember watching the episode – and he’ll be in Bolton this weekend.

The other was Bolton-born actress Tracie Bennett, who has been nominated a best actress Olivier for her role as Judy Garland in Over The Rainbow. Despite living in London now she still sounded very Northern and grounded, and despite her rave reviews she still does her own tax returns.

Press cutting of Buddy Ward’s telly appearance that was sent to me, above. Apparently now he is a well respected after-dinner speaker
